Health Science Program - SCS
Dec. 05, 2017
Carolyn Beam, Norfolk General Hospital’s Education Coordinator and Brian Snow, faculty at Simcoe Composite School will be educating you on the Health Science Program offered at Simcoe Composite School in partnership with Norfolk General Hospital. The program, a unique blend of classroom work, case studies and hands on experience introduces students to the many careers available in healthcare. The students work with physicians, nurses, physios, lab techs (etc) and even tour the hospital plant to understand the support service side of healthcare. Find out how this program has influenced students in healthcare career choices and even those who may have returned to Norfolk. One other tidbit. One of our club members was a student in the inaugural year of the program and one of our members has been part of the NGH team since the inception of the program. |

Polio Surviour
Feb. 27, 2018
Doug will be speaking to us about his personal experience with Polio... I was born in Hagersville and raised on a farm outside Jarvis. I attended Hagersville High School then on to Seneca College in Toronto, graduating in 1974 with a Resource Management Technology diploma. I was employed at Bell Canada in the Outside Plant Engineering Department and spent almost 31 years in various management positions ending as a Senior Project Manager. I was offered and accepted early retirement package Dec 2002 and have spent my retirement working in the civil construction industry, and volunteering in the community on various non-profit organizations. Currently I am an elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Hagersville, a board member of the Grand Erie Business Centre which provides funding and support for small businesses in Haldimand and West Lincoln and I am also a board member on the South and Metcalfe Non-Profit Housing Corporation which includes Quetzal Family Homes, an entity that provides safe accommodations and programs for women and children escaping family violence. Together with another person, I organize and run a popular community badminton club in Hagersville High School. I have been involved in the political arena and ran as a Liberal candidate in the 1999 Provincial election. I have participated in two overseas missions- one with Habitat for Humanity in Honduras and one with Medical Ministry International helping with eye surgeries in Ethiopia. I have also been a past member of the Haldimand Hydro board before it was sold to Ontario Hydro. I have a blended family with my wife Flora. Together, we have five adult children: two of whom are in Ontario, one in Alberta, one in BC along with two grandsons and one in the UK with a grand-daughter. Between spending as much time as we can with our children and grand-children, we also spend a significant amount of time with our elderly fathers. Family is important to us.
