Very interesting presentation recently by Joan Costigan and Shayna Schaeffer from REACH about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the programs available in Haldimand and Norfolk for individuals and families who are impacted by ASD. Currently 1 in 88 children born in Ontario will experience a form of ASD, in the range of mild to severe. Bill Gates is an example of someone who has experienced a mild form of ASD, and has learned to cope very well. The character Sheldon in the popular TV show Big Bang Theory is another.

REACH is funded by Hamilton Health Sciences to deliver services in our community. They provide Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) to children diagnosed with ASD, but only have room for 9 children at a time, resulting in up to 3 years wait list. IBI is most effective for children under 5 years of age. REACH also provides other related services to a much broader group of people including group therapy, consultative services, parent education and respite services for parents.

The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise purchased 5 i-Pads for REACH in 2012, which are a very valuable tool for workers and children with ASD.
