Dr. Brian Ferguson reported to Norfolk Sunrise on Nov 22nd on the
significance to our community of the Building a Better Hospital Campaign. The Norfolk General Hospital Foundation is in the middle of a $13 million capital campaign needed to upgrade 3 areas of the hospital to current standards.

The 3 areas include:
  1. Labour and Delivery
  2. Surgical Daycare
  3. Minimally Invasive Surgery

Dr. Ferguson is NGH's first and only obstetrician/gynecologist.  He emphasized that unless our hospital is kept up to date our community runs the risk of losing many of the services we have.  Before Dr. Ferguson was recruited to Norfolk, the LHIN was suggesting that the number of babies delivered at NGH was too low, and the labour and delivery ward should be closed and local expectant mothers referred to Brantford General Hospital.  With 350 babies delivered each year currently, the hospital is able to keep the ward open, but is still concerned that expectant mothers will choose to attend another hospital for delivery unless NGH's facilities are modernized.

Dr. Ferguson emphasized that the quality of care at NGH is excellent.  The equipment he uses here is better and more modern than where he moved from in a much larger hospital in Toronto.  The same goes for the surgery equipment and expertise by surgeons at NGH.  But the facilities they work in are often crowded and less hospitable than in a more modern facility.

Three other members of the campaign team were also on hand - all Norfolk Sunrise Rotarians - Foundation Director Julie Powell, John Wallace and Keith Flexman.
