Kristyn Richardson, Projects Manager for the Long Point Basin Land Trust, spoke this week about some of the initiatives underway in Norfolk to protect and restore functioning ecosystems in the Long Point Basin and Carolinian Canada. Norfolk has plenty of forested areas so it is a relatively low investment to restore land to its natural state here compared to other regions in the Carolinian zone.

The Long Point Basin Land Trust owns 7 nature reserves, all in Norfolk County.  Two of these were acquired in 2016. They manage the properties for conservation values, and do not log forests.  They also conduct projects to conserve reptiles, birds, and other wildlife in the region, and encourage the public to come onto their reserves to walk and observe nature.

The Long Point Basin Land Trust is one of 3 significant organizations very active in acquiring land in Norfolk in order to return it to its natural state. Other organizations include the Long Point Conservation Authority and Nature Conservancy of Canada.
