	Feb 7 2012:Norfolk area entrepreneur and lawyer Mike McArthur was speaker at today’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise, representing the Ontario South Coast Wineries and Growers...’ Association. The Association incorporated in 2009 and already has 54 members including nine local wineries from 100 acres of grapes grown in the South Coast Region of Ontario. The first record of wine production in Canada dates to 1669 in Norfolk County when French missionaries Dollier and Gallinee over wintered in Port Dover. South Coast’s Burning Kiln Winery recently won international accolades and Intervin awards with five of their wines. Their Strip Room wine also was selected the official red wine of the Federal Legislature, clearly putting South Coast wineries on the map. The future looks very bright for wine production and tourism in the South Coast Region of Ontario.
	Jim & Marjorie Dawson told our club of clean water in Honduras. . This Rotary project uses the "slow sand" filtering technique which was developed and is supported by engineers at the University of Calgary. For $100 a water filtration system can be installed in a village and will provide safe drinking water for decades with almost no maintenance cost. The villagers can maintain it easily.
	Apr 17, 2012: The 15th visit from Norfolk to Welshpool in Wales took place recently, and today they shared their memories of their experiences. This is our effort to spread the good news about exchange visits by young people. Ably looked after by Rotari...an Paul Zorad and his wife Chantal, these young people were lucky to enjoy Welsh hospitality from the Rotary Club of Welshpool. In their brief visit they also got the chance to visit London, and enjoy some of the sights of one of the worlds most famous capitals! In the photograph, but not in this order, are : Rebecca Manson, Emily Hadady, Sam Devereaux, Alec Malais, Kristen Hilz, Abby Schebesch, and Victoria Speller with Rotarian Paul and Chantal Zorad. Maybe they would like to tag themselves!!!!!!
	May 29, 2012: Fascinating presentation at Rotary this morning from Brad Nunn, Investigator with the Major Case Squad, OPP. Brad was one of the lead investigators in the Bandidos murder case. Rotarians learned a great deal about the culture of a criminal... biker gang and how the investigation was conducted that led to the incarceration of several members of the Banditos gang. The investigation spanned several Canadian provinces and U.S. states. The entire Ontario Banditos Chapter was shut down, with 8 members murdered and others incarcerated. Internationally, however, the Banditos are still a powerful criminal element
	June 5, 2012: Today's RCNS meeting was held at the Simcoe Horticultural Experimental Station. After breakfast we toured the fields and learned about innovative research in horticultural crops - apples, asparagus, peaches, strawberrie...s, and other mouth watering Ontario produce. The Research Station is now operated by the University of Guelph, and shares space with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as well as with the Ontario Asparagus Marketing Board and the Ginseng Association. The Experimental Farm last year celebrated 50 years of leading edge research.
	July 18, 2012: This week's meeting took place at our latest community project which we have chosen to support.And unusually for us, it was an off-site meeting. Our guides were Karen Lindsay and Robert Judd. Great project which helps link Norfolk County's trails with the Canada-wide trail system.
	Aug 30, 2012: Our club meeting was honoured this week to have Norfolk County Mayor, Dennis Travale present his state of the county address. Mayor Travale highlighted several very positive economic development initiatives in play in our community, whilst also warning of austerity measures ahead for the municipality in the wake of the recent recession.
	Sep 12, 2012: What an inspiration! Norfolk Sunrise members and guests were absolutely inspired to meet and listen to Bonnie Virag this morning. Bonnie is author of the award winning book `The Stovepipe,` a personal account of a four-year-old girl, who, a...long with three sisters and a brother, is taken from her family and placed in the foster care system in Norfolk County in the 1940s. Bonnie emigrated to the United States in 1964 where she studied fashion design and embarked on a successful home-based business career. She married and raised a family, and later wrote and published an account of her very difficult and abusive upbringing while in foster care in Norfolk. From this troubled beginning, Bonnie has emerged a model of fortitude and an inspiration to anyone who reads or listens to her story. Bonnie now resides in Michigan.
	OCT 2, 2012: Rotary Peace Fellow Comes Home Jennifer Jacobson wasn't sure what to expect when she left her home in South-Western Ontario to attend the Rotary Peace Fellowship Program at a university in Bangkok, Thailand. But nothing could have prepared ...her for the experience. Jennifer was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tilbury to be one of twenty-three Rotary Peace Fellowship students, representing 14 countries, in this intensive 12-week certification program. Previously Jennifer had participated in a Rotary Group Study Exchange to Japan. An investigator with the Chatham-Kent OPP, and coordinator of their domestic violence unit, Jennifer was excited to take part in the Rotary peace and conflict resolution program. With this experience under her belt, Jennifer is now eager to assist her international classmates with various peace initiatives in other countries, and hopes to shift her career to include working with Interpol. From her roots in the Waterford area of Norfolk County, Jennifer has expanded her horizons and opportunities for service dramatically through Rotary. How rewarding for Norfolk Sunrise Rotarians to hear about the impact that the Rotary Peace Fellowship program is having in Ontario and abroad. 	Nov 6, 2012: Wow! What an inspiration was Captain Christopher E Finbow at this morning's meeting of the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise. Captain Finbow served in the A (Norfolk) Company with the British Armed Forces in Afghanistan. He very recently compl...eted his tour of duty and last week returned to his new bride to live in Port Dover. An eloquent speaker with a strong message of hope and "service above self." Rounding out the Remembrance Day theme, we were graced with a piper, two Waterford Legionnaires, and Honorary Rotarian and veteran John Race.See More
	Jan 13, 2012: The members of RCNS today were shocked to hear from Jane Drescher, Executive Director of the Norfolk Pregnancy Centre. What could possibly have led to a 300% increase over the past 9 months in the number of crisis pregancy clients reporting... to this agency, now in its fourth year of operation? Can it be that Rotarians "live in a bubble," as Jane Drescher did before becoming Executive Director of this agency, largely unaware of the state many people in our community find themselves. We learned that a significant proportion of people in our community cannot afford to attend to their nutritional, security and other needs. The Norfolk Pregnancy Centre strives to educate, empower and equip people to prevent and/or deal with crisis pregnancy situations. They provide services to both moms and to men who find themselves in a crisis situation related to pregnancy. They "walk the journey with their clients," through various avenues of support according to the needs of indivuduals, either through direct service or referral to other local agencies. 	Dec 4, 2012:Leigh Bathgate came to Norfolk in January 2012 as an exchange student from Upper Hutt, New Zealand. Sponsored jointly by the three Norfolk Rotary clubs, the Delhi club served as hosts. Shown in the photo are hosts Nancy Lasko (left) and Lisa Bishop (right). Leigh has been an excellent ambassador for her country. She charmed Norfolk Sunrise members and guests this morning with her warm and witty presentation.
	People in many parts of the world associate Rotary with polio eradication. Stephanie Ralph provided Norfolk Sunrise members with some really interesting background on the polio virus, its devastating effects, and the impact that vaccinatio...n efforts are having. Stephanie is our local expert on infectious diseases. A registered nurse and now working with our regional LHIN, Stephanie is the Central South Infection Control Coordinator. Some facts that you may find interesting: • 90% of the people who contract the polio virus have no symptoms but carry the virus which can spread to infect others • 1 in 200 people who contract the polio virus develop permanent paralysis in their lower limbs • the virus is transmitted via fecal-oral channels - flies carry the virus from exposed fecal matter to food which people ingest • children under 5 years of age are most vulnerable due to their lower immunity • the effects of polio are evident in the early Egyptian civillization • a vaccine was introduced in 1955, and in 1994 Canada was certified polio free • today the only evidence of polio cases are in Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Chad • 202 cases were reported in 2012, down from 553 cases the previous year • Rotary launched its Polio Eradication Program 23 years ago, and has worked in 200 countries with 20 million volunteers, vaccinating 2.5 billion children
